Flax Pond lecture series March 24 |
The Friends of Flax Pond will meet again on Sunday, March 24, at 3 pm at Childs Mansion for "Rain Gardens: Uses, Design and Creation to Protect Our Long Island Waterways" in its 2013 Winter Lecture Series.
Presenter Gary Gentile, vice president of the Long Island Native Plant Initiative, will discuss how heavy rainstorms carry debris into storm drains and then into Flax Pond and the Long Island Sound. This has caused pollution and the deterioration of the shore's ecology, reducing its ability to support life. Gentile will discuss stormwater mitigation practices that build on the natural processes for cleaning storm runoff.
The moderator will be Malcolm Bowman, professor of oceanography and distinguished service professor at Stony Brook University. Light refreshments will be served. There is no cost to attend, but donations are gratefully accepted.
